Oh boy, this is gonna be fun

Pulled and stripped the engine (which had a bad knock), to find multiple spun bottom end bearings and a spun main bearing. Crank, rods, block and main bearing cage are off to a mechanic to see if they can be refurbished or need replaced. The cost will decide the fate of the project.

Oooh that looks nasty, hope it can be refurbed, :crossed_fingers:t2:

Where in Ireland are you boys from?

I’m down in Wesht Caaark. Where are you? What do you meant by “2 bolt” ?

There’s some decent comparison photos between the 2 and 4 bolt configurations here:

Oh, ok. I have the four bolt one. Which cars had the 2 bolt one?

My understanding is that that 91-92 twin turbo cars had the two bolt and that 93 onwards had the four bolt configuration. I don’t know about DOHC NA and SOHC cars.

Huh, that’s weird, because mine is a 92 and has the four bolt.

Hmm. Is the engine definitely original to the car? To be honest I don’t know exactly when the change over was, I doubt there was hard stop right at the end of 92. Someone who’s been around these cars a while will know better than I do. I hope yours can refurbished anyhow :crossed_fingers:

Thanks! Yeah, it has a very patchy history, looks like previous owners treated it like garbage.

Im on the same boat mate. The car had been sitting on the driveway of the previous owner for 5 years and the little work he did on it prior to letting it to rust was with all dodgy parts, and nail varnish

Hi Adam, the four bolt tends to take a little more abuse than the 2 . When I said "common " , I don’t know if it’s a weakness or just from abuse, launching the car and bad maintenance .
I’m in Offaly btw.

Ah, ok! I only got the car a couple months , it had sat for 3 years previously as the owner didn’t have the time to fix the knock. It looks like it’s been absolutely thrashed, there is damage to the clutch, flywheel, gearbox output shaft and the transfer case input sleeve!

Similar story here, my car was originally silver but a previous owner painted it red and did a dreadful job, it’s peeling and there’s overspray everywhere! There is also the drivetrain damage I mentioned to Enda! Gonna be a big project, but worth it I’m sure!

I’m in Dublin North,

What’s the body like Adam, any rust ? Sound like a lot to be done but I’m guessing you’re aiming for 2022. Mine is 30 next year and should be ready for road by then.
Is she on irish plates?

The body is actually fine, apart from some rust on the boot lid. The paint is what really lets it down, looks like they did a backyard rattlecan job, absolutely terrible. It’s peeling and there’s overspray everywhere. The crap paint combined with it sitting for the last three years has made it turn a manky matte red colour. She is on Irish plates, imported from Japan about ten years ago.

Also yes, 2022 would be ideal, otherwise we wouldn’t be able to afford the annual road tax.(When I say we I mean it’s a project with my dad)

Best of luck with her, she’ll be an ultra rare car in West Cork , pity about the paintwork , hope you keep it red , it’s a great colour for them.
