Hello and help!

Hi all! Firstly, good to be here! I’ve got a 1997 GTO MR that I’ve had for almost two years now. I’ve only ever seen one other GTO in working order in my life - and that was last week at Tanoshi events in London - hi Elliot if you’re reading this!

My GTO runs well but it has a few problems that I’m looking to sort out, but I need some help and parts please.

  • I have a coolant leak coming from a pinhole in a rubber pipe near the inlet/idle speed control valve. It’s the bigger pipe that connects to what I think is a coolant reservoir entrance (labelled below). Does anyone know where I can get a spare pipe like this? Or I’ve heard that you can use some sort of plastic amalgamation tape to fix it but not sure if they’re any good?

  • I will probably try to replace/get someone to replace the brake lines at some point. Where is the best place to get them? I think Joe has a video on moulding them yourself so will try that, not sure I’m brave enough to fit them myself but anything I can do, I will try.

  • I’ve heard (from Elliot actually) that there is a really good OBD scanning tool?

  • I have an oil leak from around the front-left wheel (assuming it is a line to an oil cooler but I haven’t pinpointed it yet). I’ve tried to pinpoint where the leak is coming from but it’s hard to see, are there any common failure points around there? Would anyone have a spare lying around?

  • The clutch has a very minor leak from the slave cylinder that I am still tempted to sort out - does anyone have one of these?

There are some further, less urgent bits I may have to do (eg. exhaust, suspension, rust) but will post about them later when I’ve had a better look underneath. Any advice now is appreciated though! Similarly if you are an amateur or professional who is keen to help, I would love to hear from you.

Thanks all and take care

Alfie

Hi Alfie

Welcome to the forum.

Good to see we have another gto/3000gt fan. There is quite a large community out there and you will certainly be bumping into other owners from time to time. You may want to consider joining the gtouk club. There is a small fee to join but you will meet lots of other owners and the fee also gets you other benefits.

As for your questions. The water hose that has a hole is just a standard piece of high pressure water pipe and you should be able to buy this from ebay or a local autoparts store.

Making new brake lines is quite easy (as shown in my video) but I would recommend that you get a professional to check them over and refill the system if you don’t feel confident to do it yourself as this is safety critical. The other problems were a bit vague. You mentioned a leaking clutch but you didn’t say which part of the system is leaking. Same for the oil leak. Find the leaking parts first and we can help from there.

Hi Joe, good to hear from you! I love your channel, and made a Patreon account just to give back (as you’ve saved me hundreds, possibly thousands in repair bills so far). I hope you’re recovering well! I love my GTO and am trying my best to keep it healthy.

Thanks for your response, I’ll look into GTO UK and try to find a replacement pipe. As for the other bits, I thought I had written that it was the slave cylinder - I’ll edit that in now. I’ll try again to see about the oil leak, but I was partly hoping to learn if there are any known failure areas/pressure points then I could focus my search a little.

Hi Alfie, good to see you the other week

The scan tool is made by BlackStealth and there’s a full thread here with info about it here

I think the twin turbos have an oil cooler in front of the front left wheel arch behind the intercooler so may be leaking from there? Easiest way is always to clean it up and see where the oil reappears, access should be relatively easy as it’s just behind the arch liner.

Hi Elliott, great to see you too, you have a beautiful car. I actually missed my junction on the M25 because I was having such fun driving in convoy!

Thanks for the links, I’ll take a look. I think you’re right about the oil cooler but I haven’t got a properly good look underneath yet. Talking of which, I need to get a jack and axle standa - any recommendations? I was looking at SGS engineering but not sure if they’re any good.

You mentioned a great shop on here - is that just the ‘items for sale/items wanted’ sections here? And Joe mentioned buying my coolant hose off ebay or an autoparts store but I’m not sure what to actually type into eBay/how to describe it to a store. Do you have ideas? It might be worth taking the pipe off and bringing it to shops so they can assess the size and material?

It was nice to see another GTO running on the road for the first time (and the sound was great too!)

I’ve used jacks and axle stands from halfords which have been fine in my ownership. I’d recommend a low profile jack for ease of getting it under and a rubber pad to not mash up your subframe/diff when jacking.

Joe’s shop is here: https://the3000gtplace.com/

If you go on Amayama.com you can find the correct GTO model/year (MR for you should have its own listing) then click through the sections/diagrams to find part numbers. Once you get the hang of it you can look for parts easily. Ebay’s good usually but you can still get new items by searching the Mitsu part number and finding OEM-spec replacements (e.g. from Bosch or Febi Bilstein)
