Etacs unit Location

Strange stuff… When I got my car, the windows and mirrors did not work, but mine was a defect relay that sits in the drivers side all the way out towards the door…

Just checked all the wires underneath the engine fuse box and they all look fine. Can you remember which relay was defect at all? Thanks for your help

Here it is.. You cannot miss it from seeing this picture, and it is a proper nightmare to get out of there.. You will need a small hook tool as the relay lock pins are really hard to get to and you cannot yank it out…

But I doubt your troubles come from there, as they just sound much more severe then mine, but who knows.. Cant harm anything out by atleast diagnosing that it aint from this relay that something goes wrong.

Thanks, worth a shot as I have ran out of ideas for anything else😀

Those relays sit in that box/flat thingy which has wires running into the etacs … It is possible that somebody has kicked/yanked it sometimes in the past and the wires have gotten some damage… Look around the relays and check things around there, as you can see alot of things connected to etacs sit there.

thanks again - it is possible the whole unit may have something wrong as the defogger relay is on it too - and that doesn’t work. fingers crossed!

As for your windows not rolling down, did you unlock the window buttons? I scratched my head wondering why i couldn’t roll mine down then saw the window lock was engaged

Yeah I did try that, it’s only just happend the last week or so. They have all been fine for the last 7 years…

Hello, so was just listening to hear if the relays clicked when pressing the buttons and everything started working again?? all i have done is reshuffled loads of wires to get acces to the Power Window / Rear Fogger relays in the footwell (above the fuse box)… must be something loose but everything seems clicked in etc… strange

Atleast you have found where the problem probably originates from… Now it is just to solve it :grimacing::grin:

Yeah, thanks for the tip to looking into that area! the amount of wires in that area is scary ha ha.

Lee. I have checked the wiring diagram again and the only link between the devices is the earth wire. It looks like your wiring has been played around with so I can’t help thinking that either the earth wire has not been screwed in tight or there is corrosion around the contact. If I remember rightly, there is a couple of earth wires screwed into the bodywork near to the fuse box in the foot well. If I recall correctly, they are black and may have a fine white line.

Thanks Joe, I will have a look at that! I think you are right about the wires being played around with as the actual white plastic holder isn’t bolted on, its just got a cable tie around it to keep secure. thanks for your help.

So I went to look more into this today and I can’t get them to work once again…I checked all the wires and looks like the door locks have been re wired in the past (possibly due to having a toad alarm fitted). This works fine and is on the same relay box as the Defogger and power windows. so Im guessing all the wires going to the relay box should be fine? The only thing I need to do is check the connections of the actual 2 relays for the defogger and window. I can’t think of it being anything else now? Everything looks really clean and connected fine. cheers

My relays cut out out of the blue, and all of a sudden they would work again, and a few minutes later again cut out and not work for days and weeks, so try replacing them as they are cheap

Did you get new ones from mitsubishi or best get ones from ebay? I Have both part numbers and have found 2nd hand ones I can get. Cheers

I got mine of the internet… My Mitsubishi dealer is can never source anything, so I dont rely on them

Feel like this post is dragging on so apologies! I have just removed the defogger relay and the power window relay - visually they look fine and I cleaned and polished the ends. The only relay left on the unit is the door locks - which have always and still do work fine. When I put the 2 relays back - still the same. The Defogger Relay clicks when I press the button but I can’t hear a relay click when I press the window and sunroof button. All wires are solidly connected - I am at a loss now why it come back to life the other day (even the power mirrors worked!) and now it doesn’t again…

Dont worry if posts get long :+1::+1:

My relays also looked really good, but they just were not working… Cant say if everything will work if you change yours, but I would try that

I contacted my local Mitsubishi this morning - they can get me a power window relay for £13 and a Rear Defogger relay for £53. might just have to bite the bullet. There are 2nd hand ones online but for what its worth - its probably best to get new ones then. cheers
