I needed to replace a windshield in my 1991 3000gt SL night driving glare from pitting. I used SAFELITE and it cost $405US dollars. They were the only local installer that had the gray tinted sun visor windshield. Very close match to OEM. Two other installers had only a blue tinted windshield sun visors. SAFELITE made 2 trips to the house, one to remove and 3 days later they came back and installed the new windshield. I wanted plenty of time to get the dry rotted seals off the trim and do the vent repairs and speaker replacement.
They did the work in my heated garage (it was cold outside around 20F. This location also install outside and at their shop. They needed 5 ft clearance around the car. I did all the required trim removal and reinstall and got my own trim rubber and trim tape $28. They would have done it but I didn’t care for the rubber they had in stock. It was to wide for the left and right side trim and wiper tray. I was able to reuse the top strip between the glass and the roof. Thanks to Joe90’s videos on trim removal and how to remove and reuse the top seal strip.
I decided not to tackle pulling the dash to replace the cracked plastic defroster vent covers since the windshield was out and went with black anodized aluminum after market covers sold by 3sx in NC https://www.3sx.com/3sx-aluminum-defroster-dash-vents . They were on sale for $160. After the windshield was removed, I gently broke out the broken plastic vent covers and removed the original plastic brackets that the old vents screws were attached to with a dremel grinding stone. The aluminum cross brackets provide by 3sx were long enough to seat under the dash frame when turned perpendicular to the vent covers. If I had used the original brackets I would have had to pull the dash. The one thing I would recommend that 3sx do to improve there kit is add about a 1/4 or 1/2 inch to the long screws provided in the kit. That would have made my install even easier. I needed a 2nd set of hands to push down on the dash cover due to warping on the far right passenger and far left driver side. Be patient, it takes some time to get the properly aligned. The speakers can be easily removed without the windshield out but since it was, all I did was pop out the old tweeters, removed the speaker grill covers and reinstalled installed and lightly glued on the new speakers, installed harness to match Mitsubishi plug, to new speaker and dropped the new 3 inch full range speakers from Amazon back in the speaker hole. Here is the equipment I used thanks to KraftingKars on YouTube for the part numbers and recommendation: Dayton Audio RS75-4 3-inch 4-ohm full range speaker with a Metra part number 72-9301 harness. Over all this cost $42. Everything turned out well on this project and I was pleased with the results. Total cost $635 US.
