Transfercase Leaking Badly

Hello all my name is: Marcel
I have a: Gen1 GTO SR with Automatic

Ever since I bought my Mitsubishi GTO, I have had a problem with the transfer case leaking oil. I have replaced the output shaft seal—the one connecting to the driveshaft—multiple times, using parts from various manufacturers, but nothing has helped.

Here, you can clearly see how the oil is flung by the driveshaft onto the underside of the vehicle.

I hope someone can help me with this, because I am slowly but surely reaching the end of my rope.

OEM seal from Mitsubishi is MR983368

I know you said you’ve tried seals from different manufacturers; however, I’m unsure of what is/is not available where you are. But, I’d recommend an OEM seal or two. They look like they’re still available, at least according to Amayama: https://www.amayama.com/en/part/mitsubishi/mr983368

Also, looking in ASA, that seal is shared across a ton of Mitsubishi vehicles, so you may be able to get one from a nearby Mitsubishi dealer.

If you’ve already gone down this road and continue to have issues, I’d be looking at possible issues with the driveshaft input snout, maybe it has a bur or something that is catching/tearing the seal causing your consistent leaks.

Key Recalls and Known Issues

While Mitsubishi issued a few official safety recalls during the 3000GT’s production run, the most critical issue to look out for depends on your vehicle’s model year:

  • Transfer Case Recall (Safety Recall No. B17 - 1991-1999 models): Certain AWD (VR4) models were subject to a recall involving the transfer case, which could leak fluid, potentially leading to drivetrain failure or wheel lock-up.
