I found a nice little product online couple of years back that allowed me to use the original steering wheel controls with a modern head unit.
The manufacturer/product name is “Pac” and I found it in the states although Evil Empire now stock them.
Very neat and easily concealed behind the radio. Their website has instructions for our cars even down to the wire colours. Your head unit needs a RC input, but most modern units have.

They seem to be still available on EBay, around £50, on my List!
