Smaller Steering Wheel wanted

Hi all, I’ve tried but I just can’t get on with the London Bus Steering Wheel…anybody selling a Momo or similar with a Boss would be good. I’m in the wonderful U.K.

Hi

If you are looking for a aftermarket steering wheel then there are many on the market, I found the OE steering wheel a bit on the large side but wanted something a bit more OE looking but smaller.

After some research and trial and error I found that the steering wheel from the Colt CRT and CZC fits the GTO and the rear of the wheel is a perfect fit onto the clock spring, so you retain the Air Bag, horn and self cancelling indicator functions, I purchased used from sellers breaking vehicles on Ebay it was produced in all black leather, the Red and Black, Blue and Black and I have even seen it in Orange and black

I have attached

a photo of the wheel in situ hope the info is of some use

Marc

Hi, many, many thanks for the info. According to Rob at Evil Empire if the car had a Air Bag when new, it must still have it to pass the MOT. Seems your suggestion is perfect. Quick one, did you manage to keep your Cruise? Cheers Martin

Hi

Sorry my car was never fitted with cruise so did not affect me, however the later cars had the cruise on the steering column so there may be a way of utilising the latter column stalk switch

Hope that helps

These are on eBay, ridiculous price (if you ask me). I showed the pic to a local car interior/leather specialist here (in Ireland) and he quoted me €200 to do this for me. To recover the wheel in my choice of leather, reduce circumference by flattening out the bottom and adding thumb grips. I think it’s a nice compromise of both retaining the original wheel and updating/ reducing the size a bit. Probably someone local to you can do the same …

Thank you Marc, that would do perfectly, the hunt begins!

You are welcome, I have noticed that some of the Colt Steering Wheels do have controls on the rear of the horizontal spokes it appears that there is a rocker type switch either side with a push button in the centre there is a extra connector behind the air bag, you may be able to utilise these buttons which would make the installation very neat

I have attached a photo of the rear of that type of Colt wheel, the front looks the same as mine

Just a Idea

Thanks again! Could you let me know the Diameter of the one you have fitted and do you know if all years of the Colt are the same? Regards again, Martin

I previously came across a guide for installing an Evo 7/8 steering wheel and there’s a bit in there about dealing with the cruise control that might be helpful

The one I have fitted is 370mm in diameter, From what I researched all the steering wheels that are the same style as mine will fit irrelevant of the year, there is also a wheel fitted to the CZ2 which has cruise controls on the right hand side of the centre bar but I could not guarantee that the fitment is suitable as I have not tried one and do not know the diameter of the CZ2 wheel unfortunately

Yet again, thank you for taking the trouble to do this.

Don’t know if this is of interest, but supposedly the Evo 4/5/6 steering wheel is a direct fit if your looking for something that looks fairly OEM:

These can be had for about £200 on eBay etc.

I fitted an fto one.
It’s approx 1 inch smaller.

I was going down the evo route but @jensen360 refurbed and flattened my existing wheel.
