Small component attached to Coil Pack bracket

Hello all my name is: Marc
I have a 1997 Manual JDM GTO SR,

I have removed the Coil Pack bracket complete with coils from the car as the coil packs are looking rusty around the layered plates, there is a small electrical item attached by a cross head screw to the coil retaining bracket that has one electrical connection to the loom coning from it.

Can anyone tell me what this component is and what purpose it serves as this also looks old and corrosion is present on the case, if there is any way of testing whatever this component is I would be like to know the procedure.

I have looked up the coil pack on the parts breakdown and it appears that Mitsubishi only list the whole coil pack MD152648.

As this item is not listed I would struggle to find a replacement, if it requires replacement

Any information gratefully received

NO HELP WILL BE GIVEN WITHOUT PROVIDING AS MUCH INFORMATION AS POSSIBLE RELATING TO YOUR ISSUE

If I recall correctly, this is to stop interference on the radio from the high voltage arching produced by the coils and spark plugs. I think it is just a capacitor.

Thank you Joe,

If its just a capacitor I will try and find out if there is a way of testing a capacitor, I assume capacitors have different values and I will try and find that out.

Thanks again for the reply much appreciated

Think I saw this while going through Amayama recently, hoping I’m not completely off base!

There’s this part MB543146 for a noise condenser which checks out with what Joe suggested, comes from this schema for a 90-93 GTO TT.

There’s also the below from the ‘volume 2’ service manual for the 1991 3000gt, section 54 page 92:

I’m no good with wiring diagrams but the manual has some for the audio system in section 54 pages 82-84. Maybe worth giving that a read to see if there’s a spec for the capacitor in there.

Hi Elliott

Thank you for the information, as you say this does seem to back up Joe’s explanation and presumably if there is no interference on the cars audio equipment then this item is working correctly.

Its a relief that this has no direct connection to the performance of the coil packs, thanks again for the information and the drawings from the manual.
