Sensor messages : which is right ? Sensor or Engine ? or else?

Hello, my name is Michel Dubourget and I am from France

I’ve just finished replacing the water pump, oil pump, and the entire timing system on a 1993 European-spec 3000GT TT—an MK1 with a 6G72 4-bolt engine.

I’m reaching out again regarding an issue I’d previously mentioned, but which has since developed further. I re-adjusted the timing belt alignment, and it is now perfectly aligned on both the camshaft pulleys and the crankshaft: no noticeable misalignment, not even half a tooth.

When starting, the engine runs perfectly on all cylinders, but after 15 seconds, the check engine light comes on and the engine stalls.

I ran a diagnostic using Halo handheld software and got the following error codes: 22 and 23, which correspond to

22 - Crank Angle Sensor

23 – Top Dead Center Sensor.

At this point, I suspect it’s more of a sensor issue than a timing problem, but the sensors were working perfectly before I disassembled the timing system, and yet my engine seems to be timed correctly and runs perfectly. If any of you know how to test the sensors, I’d love to hear the method.

Have any of you encountered this type of problem before, and do you have any advice to help me get everything back to normal?

I should note that my ECU has been diagnosed, repaired, and checked, and is working perfectly.

Many thanks for your help : I am stuck with that issues since months and still don’t know how to fix it.

Do you have the engine with the sensors mounted on the front of the engine or the all in one unit on top. Have you adjusted it wrongly.

Hi Joe,

Thanks for your answer. There are two sensors mounted on the side of camshaft pulleys, and it’s not possible to swap them because their connectors are different. I haven’t removed these sensors, so they are definitely in the correct positions.
