Rear shock absorbers

Hi folks, I’m after a pair of rear shocks for my 96 GTO. The shocks are basic units without ECS. The pair fitted to my car appear to be leaking. I would prefer standard but aftermarket units would be fine. I have looked in the usual places but can’t seem to find anything suitable. Seen a used one on eBay for £200 but that seems expensive. Amayama may have them but the postage is very expensive. Any help greatly appreciated. Kenny

KYB make non-ECS shocks for our cars, a quick look on eBay reveals there are some available, but always check with the seller that they are exactly what you need.

Thanks for the reply. I believe the part number is MB631739. This has a large tapered (I think!!) bush and matches the one’s removed. I have managed to find a new pair of non Mitsubishi shocks for the car so hopefully just a matter of transferring the springs from the old to the new units. Hopefully this means I can now start rebuilding the rear axle.

Try Rockauto thats where i got mine from i needed all 4 , superfast shipping . give it a look

A note to all - as far as I can tell these will not fit the TT springs and top mount set-up. The part number for converting ECS to non-ECS using the original fittings is KYB-341185 - these are what I used on my car when I did the swap :+1:

I have had the rear shock nightmare also, from experience I can confirm that if your 4WD car has ECS then the non adjustable (doing away with your ECS) KYB rear shock part number KYB 341185 is an item that will fit, you can use your existing top mount and spring.

However if like me you have a NON ECS AWD car then KYB (as far as I can ascertain) do not do a replacement. the original Mitsubishi part number is MB631739 but is very expensive (too expensive for me) .

KYB341183 is designed for the NON ECS Rear shock on the FWD cars and is too short to be used in replacement for MB631739.

I have purchased both on recommendation from various Forums, the KYB341183 (Too short) and KYB341185 which is the correct height but will not accept the top mount (the diameter of the piston is too large) and also the spring mount on the shock is designed to accept the ECS spring diameter not the NON ECS Spring.

Also information that may be of use on AWD cars is that the Tein lowering spring set is designed to fit the ECS struts and therefore will fit only the front struts on a car that was from the factory fitted with NON ECS the rear springs are a larger diameter that the factory fitted ones.

The only aftermarket spring set that I can find to fit a AWD NON ECS car is manufactured by Eibach but I am afraid I do not have any part numbers. for those.

If anyone has a spare set of top mounts from the ECS type rear shocks I would be interested in purchasing.

Hope the info helps

The shocks that I ordered from Rockauto on Sunday evening arrived early this afternoon, great service USA to the UK within three days. However my car is a GTO, nonturbo, non electric, four wheel steer and four wheel drive. The advice given above is spot on and the shocks don’t fit my car. Need to reassess and look at my options.

Sorry I did not see this post earlier, perhaps I could have saved you from the purchase of the KYB 341185, I too have a pair of brand new 341185 “In Stock” as it were, if I was able to use them the options as I see it is either to get a set of Top mounts and rear springs from a Pair of ECS shocks (I have had no luck with this route) or just get the ECS Top mounts and a pair of Tein rear springs (which will obviously fit).

The only other option I could think of would be to Modify the Top mount from the MB632739 to accept the larger diameter piston, which would involve sourcing a steel tube of a suitable internal and external diameter drill out the steel cap to accept the threaded section at the top of the Piston to allow you to bolt it up and get a Spring custom made with the bottom outer diameter the size of the ECS Spring and the Top outer diameter the same size as the NON ECS Unit.

Unfortunately no one seems keen to sell the Top mounts from the ECS shocks as most of these units are being kept for rebuild as it appears there are a great deal more ECS equipped cars out there than the NON ECS. The AWD SR and MR designated cars both have the NON ECS MB631739 Rear shocks as standard, I am unsure about the springs as I have seen at least two different numbers of coil turns and spacings on MB631739 shocks so my assumption is that the Springs themselves are different although both are the same overall length.

I hope you have more luck than I have

When I quoted MB632739 that was a Typo it should have been MB631739 Many apologies

Hi mate. Were did you purchase the kyb341185. Im looking for a set. Thanks.

I purchased my rear shocks from Rockauto in America. However they don’t fit my car. I have given up looking for new and will go for aftermarket. Regards Kenny
