Hello all my name is:Jim
I have a: 3000GT
It has the following issue: I am having a problem figuring out the harness for the power mirrors. Let me explain. I used to own a junkyard here in Bradenton Florida in the '90’s. I restore/modify 1970 Pontiac GTO’s and I thought the power mirrors from a '92 3000GT would be a vast improvement over the tiny GM stock 1970 counterparts and look great. I pulled a pair of mirrors off of a 3000GT and had them painted to match the car. This was circa 1998 and they have sat in a box since then while other car projects, job, family, etc took preference. I am now ready to see if they can be installed on my GTO. Both mirrors are heated, but I won’t be using this feature. I just bought both door harnesses and the dash harness from an early 90’s 3000GT. For the last 3 days I have carefully dissected out and isolated the power mirror circuits. 3 wires come from the switch and run to each mirror. I can apply 12v+ and ground at the switch connection and each mirror moves. There is also a black wire with silver dashes that comes from the switch. I assume this is ground? How does power get to the mirrors? There are no other wires anywhere in this circuit. Is the black wire 12V+? Are the mirrors grounded to the doors by their attachments? I am so close but this is frustrating. Any thoughts would be appreciated
I hope it’s OK to post on this forum since I only own PART of a 3000GT, but I have nowhere else to turn.
After looking at the power window circuit, it seems that 12V pos and ground MUST route through the switch which sends power and ground to either the L or R mirror and through the 3 wires from each mirror to switch. My switch has 7 terminals - 3 to each mirror and a black wire with silver dashes which I assume is ground. So how does power get to the switch? There should be a (?red) 12v pos wire coming to the switch, but there are no connections for same. Were there different switches and/or harnesses for different year 300GT’s or was the harness different between a heated vs non-heated mirror car?
I have verified that all motors work and all wiring is continuous from switch to mirrors.
I do not hold this information myself Jim because someone else uploaded it. The tech guy is looking into the problem and I hope it will be sorted soon.
I will have another word with tech. I thought that this had been sorted. Sorry for the delay. Many of the forums have this stuff and people on ebay also sell discs with it on.
Hi Jim, the 3sx website has most of the technical resources by year so you can find the correct diagrams for your mirror. The electrical manuals are in the ‘Vol 2’ version for a given model year or in a separate supplement. Link is below:
Additionally, there are some very detailed schematics of the 1991 wiring layout which can be downloaded below, these may help too as you can trace which connections go where. The door wiring harnesses start on diagram A before going elsewhere in the car.
