Hello all my name is: Chris
I have a: 1991 3000 vr4 twin turbo
some time not all the time the key dose not turn on the starter motor .
car runs fine when it dose go.
i looked at a video on youtube . person wired cable onto starter motor via push button mounted where cigarette lighter was.
he says starts first time all the time since.
sounds like a great fix for my car.
You may not like my answer.
Why not find the fault and fix it properly? This should be a simple cheap fix. It may be that your starter motor is faulty and the bodged up wiring may not solve the problem.
You are lucky enough to own a classic car that is becoming rare. You should be doing everything possible to keep it as it should be. Please just ask for help if you need it. A video for starter faults and repair is coming soon.
I am 99% sure that you will be able to fix the problem for less money than bodging the job and not have to worry about the car catching fire or losing sale value.
Do not go replacing parts willy nilly because someone tells you that this list of parts could be faulty. Find the fault by simple systematic testing. You just need a $5 test meter or a 12v bulb that you can remove from the side light for free.
Do you hear a click near the engine when you turn the key?
Take Joe’s advice, carry out some simple tests the next time you have the issue, should be a very easy problem to diagnose. The after market push switches may seem like a cool mod but the ones that you mentioned , designed to fit into the cigarette lighter are cheap and nasty and can stick on and destroy your starter . I’ve seen this happen twice , and when you can smell the starter , it’s too late.
There is a relay between the key and the solonoid, located in the box under the bonnet, also do you have any sort of alarm in the car?
Enda
i will try my best to get to the bottom of it , just wanted some feedback . i am spary by trade , its just knowing where to start.
as for alarm i am not sure , there is no “key fob” but dose state in the book that it came with factroy fitted alarm . i have not started to look into this issue , its just knowing where to start ? @joe90 all that happens is light come on in dash turn key , small click not like stater click . then i lift bonnet up connect up boost battery pack and away she runs, battery is brand new clac type, its on a bettery charger when not it use ( new type for calc battery ). problem happens most of the time when its warm. not sure if thats any help . would be a good idea to start with the starter ?. remove service etc.
I think I know the answer to this and it shouldn’t cost a penny.
First. Remove the battery terminal connections from the battery and make sure they are perfectly clean and clamped on tightly when you refit them.
If that doesn’t solve the problem, Disconnect the battery. locate your starter motor. There will be one very thick wire and a thinner wire going to it. The thinner wire is a push on spade connector. Pull the spade connector off the starter. You will see that the connector and terminal are both covered in oil and dirt. You must clean the terminal properly and either fit a new spade connector or crimp the old one slightly so that it fits tightly back onto the terminal. Then re-connect the battery. This should solve the problem. Let us know how it goes.
This is a very high current load wire in a very hot environment. Soldering would be a bad idea and potentially a fire risk if the unprotected wire came off. Solder may not handle the load and would soon have dry joints. Don’t try to modify something that has worked perfectly for 30 years. The same method is used by just about every car manufacturer in the world and they do it this way for a reason. Just fit a new terminal or clean and tighten the old one. Simple.
