have determined that speedometer is not working because the drive gear inside the 6-speed transmission is worn out; i replaced the driven gear, and put the car up on a 4-point lift and ran car in-gear; the vehicle speed sensor shaft barely rotated, and could be stopped with light finger pressure; thus, i am pretty certain the drive gear that is inside the transmission is at fault; before I remove the transmission to gain access to this part, I would like to have the new part in hand.
