Hello all my name is Lee. I have a 1998 GTO SR. Ive had this problem for a few years now. It doesn’t happen often - probably about 1 in 20 times of starting the car. There is literally no crank, just a click when trying the key. Sometimes it won’t start for 15 mins or so, then will start as normal. I am thinking of 2 possible causes - I have a Toad alarm which could be causing the issue or perhaps a deteriorating starter motor / starter wiring? Has anyone had this problem or know the best place to start looking? Thanks.
Both of the problems that you mentioned are common causes. The starter motor is easy to test in situ. I think I did a video that covered starter testing. Back in the old days we did a simple starter test by tapping it with a hammer while someone else turned the key. If it then started, you know it’s faulty. You just need to fit a new set of brushes. This was covered in the same video and it’s a quick, cheap repair without buying a new starter.

Thanks Joe. I just watched your video and will give it a go. I bought a new starter many years ago so might just swap that/clean the connections etc and see how it goes. Thanks.
