Help - problem I just can't figure out

Hello all my name is Lee, I have a 1998 GTO SR. Im at a loss with this now, last December my car started to get what looked like a misfire (engine shaking/exhaust puffing) that came on and off randomly. I linked my scanner tool up and it said the problem was the Cam Position sensor. A few weeks back, I got the sensor replaced along with a new timing belt (as the sprocket had to come off anyway to fit the sensor anyway), pulleys and tensioner. It worked fine for a day but now the problem has come back - although it seems to go away a bit quicker maybe. Spark plugs were changed 5 years ago. I am at a loss at what it could be? Thanks.

I’m thinking along the lines of bad connector or break in the cable. I have now seen a couple of broken wires but the sleeve is still fully intact.

Thanks for the reply Joe. Is it the cable that leads to both the cam and crank sensor connections you mean? (pictured). also - when I scan it still gives me the error for the cam position sensor (even after replacement of the sensor and timing done etc). thanks.

Is that your car in the picture? It looks like new. That is the cable that I was thinking of but you need to check it end to end. Looking at the general condition in the picture would suggest that this may not be the problem but worth checking anyway if you don’t have any other ideas come along.

Hi Joe, yes thats my engine, I do try and keep it as clean as possible. Thanks, I will try to check the wires the best I can. Looks like the cable may go directly to the ecu? I just can’t think of anything else it could be if the scanner tool keeps showing the cam position sensor error. Thanks again.

I had the exact same fault, mine ended up been the caps in the ECU, swapped them and it ran great again, I swapped my cam shaft sensor, you don’t need to remove the belt or pulley to swap it though, mine came off easy.

Thanks for the reply. I think I defiantly need to send my ECU off to Joe soon to get it refurbished.

I removed my ECU this morning (not as bad as I thought it was going to be). Capacitors dont loom like they have leaked. I take it that its still a good idea to replace them. Does anyone have any idea where I can get replacement ones? Thanks

Capacitors are A9813 x2, A9728 and A9745. I’ve looked and looked but can’t seem to find anything. Thanks.

I have no idea what those numbers are that you are quoting. You need the uf, V o/c, lead spacing and capacitor dimensions. You will no doubt find them on ebay and a thousand other component suppliers in the UK. Google is a great tool.

Thanks Joe. I can see what I need now regarding the values. It’s a learning process for me but its finally clicking ha. Thanks.
