ECU Rebuild Generally Means?

Hello all. My name is: Maurice
I have a 3000GT Base model

I want to replace my ECU; however, I am confused about the best option to take.
One seller says the ECU fits my vehicle matching the part number. Price $320. I assume the rebuilding means new capacitors. The other company offers a rebuilt ECU and asks for the vin# so the software is an appropriate match. This seller wants $750 for the unit. After asking the first company if their rebuilt unit included a reflashing of the software, they said there was nothing to flash in the ECU. Now I’m confused. Is there a memory chip in the ECU that can be reflashed or not? I’m having difficulty finding that level of detail and justifying the additional dollars if software reprogramming is not happening.
Thanks.
What would you do?

ECU rebuild usually includes replacing capacitors, repairing traces that are damaged by the corrosive electrolyte that leaked out of capacitors, possibly replacing other damaged components.

Most of the ECUs are not flashable, so you have to either get yours rebuilt, or buy a rebuilt ECU with the same part number to ensure compatibility.

I think there is some cross-compatibility between some of the part numbers. But it’s safest to stick to the same part number.

IIRC, only the 98-99 ECUs are flashable, but there may be some minor issues when reflashing them to work with older model years. For example, IIRC, the 98-99 ECUs do not have the circuitry for controlling the evap purge solenoid on earlier years.

Exactly as Pickles said about 98-99 flashable units I currently run first gen with new Jester Chrome ,you will require evap solenoid with new flashable units for sure first gen up to second gen years of 94- 94 . Seems for my thinking it Mut1 and Mut2 years that require evaporate solenoid

Hi
Its usually far easier to replace the caps and get it repaired, any electronics place can do these quite cheap, try a tv and radio repair shop
its quite easy to do yourself if you can use a soldering iron, unless the old ones have leaked and it can be more in depth
if your replacing the ecu for another as long as the ET number is the same it will work,
have a look here if your thinking of doing it your self, also you can go by looking at them, when mine failed they still looked brand new, changing them cleared the fault
replacing the caps

cheers
