Common yet potentially serious points of failure

Hi all, I’m trying to be proactive as a new owner and was recently taken surprise by my crank pulley coming apart (shortly after the characteristic squeaky noise started). Beyond following service intervals and being on top of obvious MOT fail stuff, is there a list of bits like the crank pulley which should be replaced proactively given the age of these cars?

I’ve watched Joe’s video on leaks and water ingress but seem safe in that regard currently. I’m conscious my car was off the road for 10+ years and is now 35 years old. Having done the 60k service, all fluids, fixed steering leaks, restored brakes etc, is there a writeup or resource with things like the crank pulley which should be replaced sooner rather than later? Thanks

I haven’t heard of or come across any common catastrophic issues with these cars as long as you carry out recommended service intervals, especially the cam belt. They are incredibly well built and there are people on this forum with more than 1/4 million miles on the clock and still going strong. The delaminating pulley is common now but rarely leads to much other than squeaking because the belt and cover will usually hold it in place until you replace it. Those that ignore the squeak may pay the price. Look after your car and she will look after you for many years to come.

Thank you Joe, I’ll keep up with the service intervals and hope for many miles of fun driving. It’s nice knowing that Mitsubishi must have put a lot of research and know-how into the car as their flagship offering back in the day.
