Hi I have a mk1 turbo with 5speed gearbox. When it’s in neutral there is a grumble from the clutch area. When you press the clutch pedal it goes. I presume it’s the thrust bearing. Interest to hear your opinions on it please.
I think you would normally get thrust bearing noise when you press the clutch pedal. I would suspect a worn gearbox input shaft bearing. Either way you will need to remove the gearbox … check the thrust bearing (and clutch condition) and if ok check the input shaft bearing. Those are my first thoughts
You can absolutely get throw out bearing rattle when in neutral. Been then, done that. It’s not uncommon.
