Hello all, Kevin with a 1994 3000Gt Base, Backyard mechanic - timing belt installed, engine now running bad, sounds terrible, I have went back through my timing install several times, everything looks correct, all marks (4 cams 1 crank) are on with #1 TDC - My manual has a interesting special note as follows - “Caution-If either camshaft sprocket is rotated one complete turn clockwise or counterclockwise after lining up the timing marks of the other camshaft sprocket, the intake and exhaust values might interfere. Consequently, if a camshaft sprocket was turned too far in lining up the timing marks, be sure to rotate it back from that position to line up again the timing marks.” My head hurts trying to understand this…Is the manual saying that either the Exhaust or Intake Cam on the same Head can be 1 complete turn off from each other? Thanks for any information!
Thanks for the reply, I basically used this system (one tooth back) when I installed the belt. I have taken the crank pulley back off and rechecked that all timing marks line up and they do. But something is still terribly wrong. Still trying to figure out what I did or didn’t do. again thanks for replying!
If its running bad and sounds terrible and the timing marks are aligned then you either have a huge leak, missed reconnecting something, or worst case scenario dropped a washer or something and it ate a valve.
Thanks so much for your reply….now let me share todays adventure…pulled the crank pulley, again, 3rd time this week, rechecked timing and all is good…just because of something I read I pulled the icu off, just looked at it, checked the pins, checked the connectors, didn’t see anything abnormal (the icu is about 2 months old, replaced it just cause I could, you know, why parts are still available) pull is all back together and she fired right up and ran fine, I drove it up and down in front of my house for about 5 minutes cause I was scared to go far, good thing, after just a couple miles back and forth the motor did a hick up, quite running and I coasted into a driveway, now I have a no start….its turning over, cranking, but making absolutely no sign of running….another thing I noticed is my tack was not working today, that’s a new development, the gas gauge is not working either…so what the heck would take a perfectly running motor and shut it down….i am thinking I should pull a plug and let lay on the cover and see if I have spark…any ideas would be very welcomed…thanks
Sounds like you have an intermittent problem or a short somewhere! Check the usual spark, fuel ,injectors, immobiliser if you got one too could prevent the engine from starting
Did you do anything to the lifters? If so, a misaligned roller rocker thingy will sound terrible.
Thank you for your reply!
